Tate's the kind of guy that likes to be comfortable, so his wardrobe choices aren't exactly interesting. When not in uniform he likes t-shirts, jeans, comfortable jackets, sneakers. In uniform he tries to wear his tie as loose as they'll let him, and often tries to get away with not tucking in his shirt. These are not oversights, though he may act like they are - he just feels better when he's not all buttoned up. What
is an oversight is if his clothes look rumpled. He maybe forgot to iron. Or, like, forgot to fold his laundry at all. He wears his glasses about as often as he wears his contacts, and it's mostly dependent on how distracted he was in the morning while trying to get ready, or how late he was going to be because he misjudged what time it was while he was reading.
PB: Andrew Garfield
Likes: Reading (preferably non-fiction, but whatever will do). Reading upside down, for some reason. Jungle gyms. Learning. Exploring. Text-based interactions. Skateboarding (preferably just around, tricks are ok). Archery. Playing trombone. Scary movies.
Dislikes: Giving speeches in class. Wearing ties. Tucking in his shirt. Watching movies or TV shows that aren't scary/educational/documentaries. Not having a book on him. Having nothing to occupy his time. Fruit. Condiments.

Tate's not exceptionally awkward when it comes to teenaged boy standards, but everything about him generally does scream 'nerd,' 'uncool,' and 'maybe a little weird.' He's totally fine with that, though - even though his parents have always nudged him in different directions than he'd go in on his own, they were never discouraging, and with two older siblings that learned to be themselves before he was out of elementary school, Tate always sort of figured he might as well just embrace who he is. And who he is is a very curious, very bookworm-y kind of guy who trips a decent amount and is not the most social of creatures. Though not unfriendly, Tate isn't pumped to interact with people, and while he's eager to learn about new things, he's not eager to converse. Listening is fine, but he'd much rather be reading a book than having to talk, especially about himself. There's nothing particularly sensational in his history, but it is a chore to get much out of him about who he is or where he came from. He tends to be more expressive in his body language than many others, though, so it can be a helpful tool in trying to suss him out. At least he's a little more talkative in text-based communication, like online or in cool magical journals?
Given his somewhat quiet nature, it's unsurprising that Tate doesn't seek out parties, but he'll tag along if asked without too much convincing. And while Tate still seems somewhat surprised when he's invited to things by someone he's not extremely close with, he appreciates the gesture even if he doesn't feel any pressure to go to things just because he was asked. Large social events don't make him anxious, but they simply generally do not interest him; he often brings a book so he can sit in a corner and read, but he won't be annoyed if someone comes to talk him. He just might continue to not talk much. And might still read a little. He's curious about most things, though, and while a lot of his curiosities have become focused on the Shadow World as of late, start explaining anything new to him and he's likely to listen closely and actually engage in the conversation too, at least for a little while.
Having grown up with highly organizational parents, Tate is not organized at all. He does take well to other people structuring and organizing his life, though. If someone tells him to do something he's likely to do it as long as he doesn't have any objections to it, and even if he isn't initially convinced, making a sound argument that its advantageous to him in some way often will get him to comply. Still, while he may be relatively obedient, he may have to be told once or twice. With his mind often wandering and his focus on other things, he's not the greatest listener. He also doesn't always remember conversations that well for the same reason. Sorry!
With an easily distracted mind and a tendency to read while doing other things, Tate can come off as a little clumsy as well; he trips somewhat frequently, he's gotten his glasses replaced three times this year, and his dog at home actually did eat his homework that one time (he spilled soup on his worksheets). Jokingly, Tate attributes this to bad luck, especially knowing that his arcana is the Wheel of Fortune, but it doesn't bother him all that much. Everything is replaceable, and his sense of dignity left long ago. This means he isn't shy or easily embarrassed by his own mistakes or much of anything else.
He's never really be a 'many friends' kind of guy, but since attending Finchwood he's at least sorted out how to make closer friends, and has become relatively attached to some of his classmates. It's definitely a change from his time back home, and he's found that he likes having people to confide in. While Tate tries to be a dedicated friend, he's still trying to figure things out, and may be thrown off a little if someone really comes to him for help; he's not really a touchy-feely kind of guy, and given that he himself isn't very sensitive at all, he can struggle to comfort others. The good intentions are there, though.
Despite a clear love of learning that one might expect to lead to a variety of passions, Tate really just seems to be floating along in life; he's definitely found more purpose here at Finchwood, and has actually made some closer friends, but there's a sense of directionlessness to him. This is maybe slightly concerning for a senior, but he doesn't seem to be too worried about it at least. He loves to apply himself to learning, but not really much else. Trombone and archery have gotten a surprising amount of attention from him, but otherwise? He's just fine to continue on. Occasionally, though, Tate will get laser focused on something he's trying to sort out, and doesn't really listen or pay attention to anything going on around him. It can be a little obsessive. Most of the time this isn't a huge issue, but... he should probably learn to not do that.
Though he's generally quiet, and maybe not the best at making friends, there is a playful edge to Tate that strikes with more frequency now than it ever used to back home. He loves hanging off jungle gyms, he loves skating around with no real purpose, he loves to explore backwoods and old buildings. A lot of this is curiosity and the sense of adventure that often comes along with it, but some of it is just Tate finally starting to open up a bit with his peers. It can sometimes lead him to make poor decisions, but he hasn't died yet.
[Trombone]: One of the things outside of general 'learning stuff' that Tate actually likes. He plays a killer trombone and was absolutely in marching band before he started at Finchwood. He enjoyed the playing an instrument part, not so much the marching in a band part.
[Skateboarding]: Tate's good at not dying, but can only do a few small tricks and mostly just uses it for transportation. Occasionally gets a little rambunctious and will skate down a hill he probably shouldn't, or try to grab a bus bumper. Also, he can play trombone and skateboard at the same time. It's not really impressive, honestly.
[Archery]: Technically also a battle skill, but this was his father-required athletics back home, so he was good before he actually needed it to save his ass. Also actually enjoys this, and can shoot with various kinds of bows, though his preference lies with a longbow. When focused, he's a very good shot.
[Computer Stuff]: Not a whiz kid by any means, but Tate's decent at fiddling around with programming and fixing various general OS issues. His parents make him fix their phones and computer because his sister refuses to do it anymore. Understands a bit more about technology than your average teen. Minus social networking stuff, though.
[Useless Information]: Tate has watched a lot of docu-series, read a lot of non-fiction, and likes to learn things. And thus, he is a veritable fount of typically useless information about a broad range of topics. Just don't ask him about pop culture, please.
Family:
Lisa Minett | Mother | High School Assistant Principal
Assistant principal at Tate's old high school, which means she was pretty much breathing down his neck. Technically. Kind of. Ok she just would wave at him in the halls, which didn't exactly help his image. They used to drink tea and read together every Sunday morning. Now he just Skypes her on Sundays and asks her what she's reading. Almost exclusively calls him Tater Tot.
Gary Minett | Father | Tax Accountant
Very good at his job, very organized, and surprisingly silly, Gary Minett loves balancing books, bird watching, and gardening. He used to play tennis in high school so he started trying to get Tate into something sporty from a young age. After failing at tennis, soccer, and basketball, they settled on archery. Gary used to make Tate at least come pull weeds with him after his Sunday reading with his mom.
Andy Minett | Older Brother | 30 | Wedding Planner
Just starting out in this new career, and is definitely the highest strung of all the Minetts. He's very fashion and design conscious and kind of wishes Tate would wear some better clothes, but luckily he's an adult who doesn't live at home so Tate can usually dress however he wants without getting hounded. Organized busybody. Yes, his name is just Andy, not Andrew.
Tori Minett | Older Sister | 29 | Video Game Designer
Super smart, super loving, and super wants Tate to find some purpose in his life, and to, like, make some more friends or something. She found Finchwood and suggested it to him, obviously with no idea what was actually going on at the school. Got him sort of into programming, but not enough to be useful, sigh.
Hometown: Syracuse, New York
One would think having a child 11 years after your last kid would be an accident, but Lisa and Gary Minett don't do accidents. Methodical and detail-oriented, the couple just decided it was time for another child, and thus, Tate was born. Curious, intelligent, and quiet from the get-go, he grew up with the somewhat frenetic energy of two siblings at least ten years older than him tempered by structure of his parents. Ultimately, his home life was stable, and his siblings loved him, even with the age gap. Tori especially took an interest in her little brother's life, made easy even as she grew older thanks to attending Syracuse University, and drove him to many a sports practice and band concert. His childhood was easy, unexciting, and definitely suited to a boy that didn't crave much action.
And Tate didn't really - his entire life he's been fairly directionless, content to read and observe as opposed to engaging. With hyper organized and loving parents, though, he wasn't really allowed to entirely sit back. Most of his childhood was filled with his parents (and sometimes Tori) gently suggesting activities that he would agree to simply out of indifference - try this sport, go to this camp, try this club. Nothing appeared to really stick most of the time, but occasionally
something would actually hang around (trombone and archery, for example). While not socially inept, he seemed generally disinterested in working too hard for friendships, leaving him with a lot of acquaintances and not a lot of close friends. He'd hang out with other people, but would often be reading, and his interactions with others were generally surface level.
Middle school and high school were generally this - Tate going to whatever activities his parents had him going to, hanging out sometimes if others arranged it, excelling in classes, learning lots. Tori hounded him fairly often about making more friends and finding something he really
wanted to do, and coaxed him into programming classes which he found moderately interesting at least. She urged him to hang out with the kids from marching band. He shrugged it off. Their parents didn't seem so worried, and it's not like he didn't get along with anyone, right? Tori wouldn't let that stand, though, and thought maybe a situation where he sort of had to make friends would be good for him. That's when she came across Finchwood, and began to bother Tate about applying. As with many things in his life, he agreed - going along with things was always easier.
Finchwood presented a much more interesting experience than either of them had bargained for. There was no way Tate was going to pass up a chance to at least
try to learn about Personas and the Shadow World, and even if fighting wasn't something he was actively interested in, he wasn't against putting himself on the line. A good cause, a fascinating new chapter - both sounded good to him. Adjustment to being away from his parents and his siblings was a little rougher than he anticipated, but he did find that the shared goal of fighting Shadows and the close proximity with his peers meant that it was easier to create closer relationships. And that didn't seem so bad - might as well go along with it.
Persona: Veuliah
Element: Water
Core Classes: English*, Mathematics*, Science*, Social Studies*, Training.
Elective Classes: Computer Science. Music. Philosophy.
Clubs: Community Outreach. Gardening.
General Performance: Tate is Actually Smart, applies himself, and the results are very good. His love of reading just about anything he can get his hands on makes things a bit easier, and his natural curiosity means that almost all subjects are interesting for him. Now he just needs to bulk up his extracurriculars so he can get into a good college. Definitely has a teachercrush on Mr. Moreno and thinks he's the coolest person ever.
